INTRODUCTION TO OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATIONS

OVERVIEW

The Introduction to Optical Fiber Communications course introduces students to the fundamental principles of modern fiber-optic communication systems and apply these principles to calculate system performance.  The principles of operation and properties of optoelectronic components, as well as signal guiding characteristics of glass fibers are discussed.  System design issues include point-to-point optical links and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) fiber-optic networks.

OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATIONS LEVEL II

OVERVIEW

The Optical Fiber Communications Level II course is designed to provide technicians with a practical understanding of fiber optic theory and fiber applications in Local Area Network. This course also provides the knowledge and skills to help students design, install, terminate, test, troubleshoot and maintain cables in an intra-building and inter-building environment.

Certification: General Communications & Networking Services.

FIBER OPTIC TECHNICIAN-OUTSIDE PLANT (FOT-OSP)

OVERVIEW

A Fiber Optics Technician – Outside Plant (OSP) must be able to properly terminate, test and troubleshoot single-mode fiber optic communication systems. This includes various types of termination techniques applicable to high speed laser based systems including SONET, DWDM, FTTx, CATV networks using ITU-T G.652 and G.655 single-mode fibers. Disciplines include mechanical and fusion splicing per the TIA-758, GR-765 and GR-20 standards, and the preparation of fiber optical cables and cable management products. Testing and troubleshooting of each element of the fiber optic communication systems along with unique test requirements of SONET, DWDM, FTTx, and CATV networks. Testing roles include optical loss testing of transmission equipment and fiber spans per the TIA-526-7 standard along with an understanding of OTDR theory and skills including acceptance testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic elements and spans. The FOT-OSP understands optical loss budgets, not to exceed loss budgets and has the knowledge and skills required for troubleshooting single-mode OSP fiber optic communications systems addressing the roles of attenuation, dispersion and refection and how to identify and troubleshoot each.

Certification:  Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) Fiber Optics Technician Outside Plant (FOSP) certification can be administered upon request.

FIBER OPTIC TECHNICIAN-INSIDE PLANT (FOT-ISP)

OVERVIEW

A Fiber Optics Technician – Inside Plant must be able to accurately install, terminate, test, and troubleshoot fiber optic communication systems used in premises, LANs, enterprise and data center installations. Included are various techniques applicable to gigabit multimode and single-mode systems consisting of unique test requirements in Ethernet and Fibre Channel, but also pertinent to FTTx, security systems, and CATV networks. As many inside plant installations use multimode fiber, the FOT-ISP technician must recognize the various types - IEC defined OM2, 3, 4 & 5 multimode - and OS2 single-mode fibers along with the various proper launch conditions used when testing fiber spans as also defined by the TIA-568 and TIA-942 standards. Technicians must similarly comprehend various fiber optic cable connector types and termination used in these networks, using best practices for installing and testing fiber links.

Certification:  Electronics Technicians Association (ETA) Fiber Optics Technician Outside Plant (FOSP) certification can be administered upon request.

TESTING AND MAINTENANCE OF COMMUNICATION NETWORKS

OVERVIEW

Testing and Maintenance of Communication Networks course provides the fiber-optic cable technician with information regarding post activation fiber-optic theory and application. The course concentrates on the test equipment and procedures necessary to perform testing and maintenance for new fiber-optic cable links, troubleshooting service outages and restoring fiber-optic links to their original performance specifications.

Certification: General Communications & Networking Services.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NETWORKING

OVERVIEW

This course introduces the fundamental building blocks that form a modern network, such as protocols, topologies, hardware, and network operating systems. It then provides in-depth coverage of the most important concepts in contemporary networking, such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, wireless transmission, and security. The course will prepare you to select the best network design, hardware, and software for your environment. You will also have the skills to build a network from scratch and maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot an existing network.
